Antique Chinese Ming Chenghua Doucai Enamel Chicken Porcelain Wine Cup
The Ming Dynasty Chenghua Doucai Chicken Cup is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Chinese porcelain. Created during the Chenghua reign (1465–1487), it embodies the technical precision and artistic excellence of Ming ceramic production. This small, elegant cup was originally crafted for the imperial court, reflecting the era’s refined taste and high standards for porcelain artistry. Its delicate structure, with thin walls, a gently flared rim, and a slightly rounded base, underscores the remarkable skill of Ming craftsmen.
The decoration of the Chicken Cup showcases the doucai technique, meaning “contrasting colors.” The design is outlined in cobalt blue underglaze and filled with overglaze enamels in vibrant hues of red, green, yellow, and aubergine. The central motif features a lively scene of a rooster, hen, and chicks amidst flowering peonies and bamboo. This imagery carries deep symbolic meaning, representing prosperity, familial harmony, and fertility. Rooted in Confucian ideals, the design also reflects themes of filial piety and family unity, making it not only an artistic triumph but also a cultural emblem.
Rarity further elevates the significance of the Chenghua Chicken Cup. Due to the meticulous and time-consuming process required to produce these wares, they were made in very limited quantities, primarily for the imperial court. The fragility of the porcelain has resulted in the survival of only a few examples, making them highly coveted by collectors and museums worldwide.
This cup measures 82mm in diameter. Its age is estimated to be around early to mid Qing period. It has no damage of any kind, only normal wear and tear.
