RARE 1814, JOHN GILLIES, THE HISTORY of ANCIENT GREECE, ITS COLONIES & CONQUESTS, VOLUMES I & II EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN ANTIQUE LEATHER BOUND HISTORICAL WORKS, featuring BLACK BANDED SPINES with GOLD GILT STAMPED BAND TYPOGRAPHY, with BLACK INK CURSIVE PROPRIETARY INSCRIPTION on INSIDE PAGE,'S. C. GREENE,' FIRST AMERICAN from THE LAST LONDON EDITION, NOW 210 YEARS OLD
[Offered for your review and consideration are these first two volumes, 'The History of Ancient Greece, Its Colonies & Conquests,' of the original four volume set of early 19th century, American reprinted, leather-bound historical works by the British author John Gillies. The volumes are dated 1814 and have intact, mottled, tanned leather spines, featuring a black spine band with gold gilt stamped typography, which says 'Gillies Greece.' The leather hardboards are also intact and show wear consistent with and expected, considering their 210 year old antique pedigree. Antique American volumes published before 1815 are considered to be exceptionally early for the nascent United States, since there were only few established publishing houses at the time, located principally in the large, developed mid-Atlantic and northeastern cities. There's a black ink proprietary inscription written on the inset paper page 'S. C. Greene.' The volumes were published by R. McDermut and D. D. Arden, NY, 1814. Very handsome and quite scarce. Very nice.]
