STAMNOS
Red Figure circa 480 B.C.
This beautiful replica of a Stamnos was once used by the Greeks to store liquids and mix their wine. Depicted on this vessel is : Side A - Odysseus and the Sirens. Odysseus has tied himself to the mast of his ship so he could hear the singing Sirens but places wax in his men's ears so they wouldn't hear the Sirens and crash into the rocks.
Side B - The three messengers of Zeus. Eros, Pothos and Himeros flying over the sea, carrying gifts.
This stunning Stamnos has been made by Sofia Gkani of SJS Designs. She is an artist who is based in Greece and her studio & gallery are situated in Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens.
