John Griffith Chaney (January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916), better known as Jack London

First Great Americans stamp available in booklets (three booklet formats total). 27th honoree in Great Americans Series. London is considered an innovator of what eventually became known as science fiction.

Why the stamp was issued:  This stamp is a booklet version of the London sheet stamp issued in 1986.  While that stamp paid the make-up postage on heavy items such as parcel post, the 1988 stamp met the new 25¢ first-class rate.

About the stamp design:  The portrait on this stamp was created by Richard Sparks.  It was based on a 1914 photograph of London.  Sparks had previously designed five other stamps in the Great Americans Series.

Special design details:  A total of four 25¢ Jack London stamps were produced.

The first was the 1986 sheet stamp (#2182), which measured .84 x .99 inches and was perforated 11.  It was the first engraved definitive printed on A Press without floating plate numbers.
