In-N-Out Burger is a family-owned fast food chain that began in Baldwin Park, California in 1948. Harry and Esther Snyder opened the first 10-by-10-foot stand and introduced California's first drive-thru hamburger stand with a two-way speaker box. The name "In-N-Out" comes from the speaker box, which helped customers figure out how to order. The Snyders also hand-picked fresh ingredients every morning and Esther handled the accounting at home
In-N-Out has remained a family-owned business and hasn't franchised any loca
tions. The chain's success is attributed to its quality food and unique operating model, which focuses on delivering fresh ingredients daily. As of July 2024, In-N-Out has locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho, with plans to expand into New Mexico and Tennessee. Lynsi Snyder, the Snyders' only grandchild, is the current owner and president.
