This amazing looking coin is nearly identical to dirhams of Harun al-Rashid, fifth caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate (750–1258 AD). When Harun died in March of 809 AD, his son al-Amin (787–813 AD) became sixth caliph and immediately began minting his own coins. Since Harun had already struck coins with the right date and mint, the sole difference on al-Amin's first coins is the phrase "rabbi Allah" on the reverse – "my lord is Allah." This coin was struck at the mint in Madinat al-Salam, the then relatively new "City of Peace" – original core of the city of Baghdad and official residence of the Abbasid court. It is the finest known authenticated al-Amin piece from this mint. In 813 AD, poor al-Amin was deposed and killed by his half-brother al-Ma'mun amidst a civil war.
