This is a rare and very densely stitched antique cross stitch sampler showing letters, angels, a Holy Cross and heart, flowers, animals, a house, people and a ship.

It is stitched on linen cloth with multi-colored silk thread.

The sampler is dated 1789 and was made in what is now Belgium. The independant country Belgium didn't exist in those days, it seperated itself from the Northern Netherlands in 1830.

It measures approximately 14 3/4 x 13 inches or 37.5 x 33 cm.
