Description: Examines the history of Protestant-Jewish relations in the USA from the pre-revolutionary period up to the present. From the beginning, in Protestant teachings in the colonies, there were anti-Judaic concepts. After the Revolution, Protestant-Jewish relations were aggravated by the Sunday laws and by attempts to Christianize American traditions, as well as school education. At the end of the 19th century, during the rise of the "New Theology" in American Protestantism, a new kind of anti-Judaism developed, tending to contrast universalist, ethical Christianity with "racial, " ritual-oriented Judaism. Jews were blamed for being materialistic and claiming spiritual supremacy over others. In the 1920s-30s, Jews were seen as a menace, and were denounced as supporters of communism. The Holocaust had little impact on Protestant America. Only in the 1960s was there a call for the Church to evaluate its responsibility for the Holocaust and the first attempts were made at interconfessional dialogue.
