AVENGERS ANNUAL #8 (1978) - "Spectrums of Deceit!" Written by Roger Slifer. Art by George Perez with inks by Pablo Marcos & Ricardo Villamonte. Cover by George Perez & Terry Austin (inks). Guest stars Ms. Marvel & Thundra. Original cover price was 60 cents. From a solicitation description:”Like a loving husband would, Hank Pym finds a wonderful birthday gift for his wife Janet! It's a beautiful sparkling gem! Dr. Pym isn't concerned that the rare gem once belonged to another doctor...an evil doctor. But he should be! Through an unfortunate sequence of events, Doctor Spectrum (via the body of Janet Pym) walks the Earth again! The rejuvenated Dr. Spectrum swiftly knocks out Quicksilver, Wonder Man, and Iron Man; but the remaining avengers subdue him with ultraviolet radiation! The Avengers think the crisis is over; however, the wicked gem stays grafted to the Wasp's hand. After consulting the Master of the Mystic Arts, Earth's Mightiest Heroes learn that they must locate the former members of the Squadron Sinister to save their teammate! Tracking down Hyperion, the Whizzer, and the prior Dr. Spectrum...is that really a good idea? Let the blockbuster battles begin! First, Ms. Marvel, T'challa, and the Vision vs. Hyperion and Thundra! Then Cap, Wanda, and Hawkeye vs. the Whizzer! And finally Shell-Head and the thunder god vs. Dr. Spectrum! An outstanding annual! Cameo appearances by Doctor Strange, Clea, and Wong. Avengers Lineup: Beast, Black Panther, Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Vision, Wasp, Wonder Man, and Yellowjacket. (Notes: The Squadron Sinister (not to be confused with the Squadron Supreme) previously appeared in Giant-Size Defenders 4. The Whizzer returns in Amazing Spider-Man 222 as the Speed Demon. Hyperion appears next in Thor 280. This story is essentially the final appearance of the Squadron Sinister as a group.)”; and
AVENGERS ANNUAL #9 (1979) - "Today the Avengers Die!" Written by Bill Mantlo. Art by Don Newton. Inks by Jack Abel & Joe Rubinstein. Cover by Newton & Rubinstein (inks). Original cover price was 60 cents. [Solicitation description]: “At the end of Iron Man 114, the powerful Arsenal disappeared without a trace. In the meantime Earth's Mightiest Heroes have been too busy fighting other super-villains to spend time looking for the awesome creature. But there are several overlooked clues that could pinpoint Arsenal's whereabouts! First, rumors have persisted for years that the United States built doomsday robots to continue fighting World War II in the event that the U.S. mainland suffered catastrophic losses. Second, Iron Man's late father, Howard Stark, worked on several high-tech secret projects for the federal government during the war. And third, the Avengers' headquarters was the former townhouse of Howard and Maria Stark. Very interesting! Is it possible...could it be possible...that Arsenal is hiding somewhere in the bowels of Avengers Mansion? Wow! It's a super showdown...the mighty Arsenal vs. the mighty Avengers! Can Iron Man lead the Avengers to victory against one of his father's greatest creations? Win or lose, heartbreak will rule the day for the golden avenger. A sensational story! Cameo appearance by Peter Gyrich. Flashback cameos by Howard Stark and President Harry Truman. Avengers Lineup: Beast, Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Vision, Wonder Man, and Yellowjacket. (Notes: This underrated annual was Bill Mantlo's best Avengers story. Arsenal returns to action in Incredible Hulk 282.)”
