a Chadic language.
Explore the story and symbolism behind this intriguing piece below.
Kifi means “fish” in Hausa, a language that originates from and is widely spoken in Central Africa. The striking pendant in this Kifi Necklace takes the abstract form of a fish and is made from brass using the ancient lost wax process that is used by artisans from the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. The fish is symbolic in many cultures around the world and broadly symbolize femininity, good luck and happiness.
In African mythology, ancient creation myths tell of Mangala, the creator, planting seeds in the cosmic womb. From these seeds two fish erupted and were set forth into the cosmos upon the waters of creation. In this context, the fish represents fertility and creativity by embodying a new phase of initial life. Sponge coral beads complement the pendant both visually and thematically as both elements stem from the ocean. Water is associated with depth of knowledge and birth as a result of the common concept that life springs from water.
This stunning large pendant measure an impressive 4 inches in width and 3.25 inches in height and it is of exceptional quality. The pendant is separated by gorgeous large nuggets of Moroccan amber that bring an aura of warm radiance. This stone is said to help the wearer increase their inner vision and introspection, while dissolving tension and strengthening rational thought.
The color orange also encourages optimism, growth and brings
things to a stage of maturity. In this respect, its symbolism ties into the
full moon, where you reap the rewards of your labor. Old brass beads from West
Africa enclose the amber beads on both sides and add to the earthy richness of
this Kifi Necklace.
The gorgeous 50mm bone bead from Kenya is one of the main elements in this necklace. These authentic bone beads are hand carved from boiled, bleached cow bone, polished, and then buffed smooth making each bead completely unique.
The two large Beige Bone beads across both sides of the
necklace are also made from recycled cow horn. Vintage brass beads at the
necklace mid-way and ends are made in a village near Kumasi, Ghana, using the
lost wax process.
The necklace measures 24" allowing the pendant to be positioned nicely over the heart center of the body.
This is a piece that will make a standout statement against a winter polar neck or casual summer shirt, making it a staple that you’ll love coming back to time and time again.
