Tupac (2Pac) Shakur is a legendary emcee. Born in Harlem on June 16, 1971, Tupac moved to Los Angeles in 1988 and helped lay the foundation down for West Coast gangsta rap. His lyrics spoke to social issues, an authentic and raw expression of what he saw in the world. His solo debut album, 2pacalypse Now, dropped in 1991 and was only the start of things to come. He would go on to sign with Death Row Records, eventually releasing his fourth studio album All Eyez On Me under the label, which is now considered an all-time classic rap record.
Pac was infamously at the center of the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry. Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. exchanged diss records filled with lyrics that publicly taunted one another, including “Hit ‘Em Up” and “Against All Odds.” The rivalry was fueled by CEO Suge Knight of Death Row Records. Later that year, Tupac was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas strip in 1996. Even in death, Pac’s defiant attitude and relentless pursuit of expression remain as relevant as ever.
