Engraving needs periodic oiling (as it cannot be polished inside the grooves) till the body oils do the job

Toki is an adze used for carving wood; this is worn with a plaited cord in a style unique to NZ. The carvers developed a style of wearing this around the neck so their prized possession (wood carving tool) will not be misplaced.

Maori valued argillite's strength, hardness and ability to hold a sharpened edge - which make it ideal for making tools, especially adzes.

Argillite is highly indurated MUDSTONE Along with GREYWACKE, it comprises the basement rock of NEW ZEALAND, and so is an important rock type throughout the country. It has been subjected to significant amounts of tectonic movement over a long period of time (some New Zealand argillite is over 300 million years old). Although similar to Shale, argillite is generally not fissile, i.e. does not preferentially break along closely spaced bedding planes. It differs from slate in its lack of foliation.

Originally this rock formed when quartz silt and sand particles mixed with volcanic ash from nearby erupting volcanoes as they settled to the bottom of the ocean floor. Once there they became lithified into solid rock. Later intense heat and pressure metamorphosed the rock.
