From back cover:

Selected for the introductory course in drama, the nine plays in this collection are ideally suited to help students develop skill in reading drama.  Ranging from classical drama to the theater of the absurd, these plays will help students to discover themselves the vital connections between contemporary drama and the theater of other times.

Each play, with the exception of Ibsen's LITTLE EYOLF, is preceded by an introduction that offers clues on how the play can be approached; discussion in depth is left to the individual instructor.  These instructions are designed to reveal something of the author's intention, of his individuality and originality, and also something of the character of the theater for which he wrote.  When necessary, a context of time, place, and milieu has been provided.  Instead of introduction for LITTLE EYOLF, the editors have included a transcript of a student discussion of that play.  Excerpts from Aristotle and Tolstoy, included in an appendix, define the essentials and concepts of dramatic criticism and offer contrasting theories of literature.

Plays included are:

Sophocles                               Oedipus Rex

William Shakespeare                The Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra

Sir George Etherege                 The Man of Mode or Sir Fopling Flutter

Moliere                                    Don Juan

Anton Chekhov                         The Cherry Orchard

George Bernard Shaw               The Doctor's Dilemma  - A Tragedy

Tennessee Williams                    The Glass Menagerie

Eugene Ionesco                        Maid to Marry
