THROTTLE POSITION SENSORS (TPS)

The throttle position sensor (TPS), also called a throttle potentiometer, idle switch or throttle switch is located either on the throttle pedal or the throttle body. It measures how far the accelerator pedal is being pressed which is then relayed to the ECU so that it can supply the engine with the correct amount of fuel in order to maintain smooth acceleration and a stable engine speed.

If these sensors fail then you will likely see the engine management light illuminate and will notice high idle speed, surging RPM and possibly engine misfires. The sensor housing can be checked for damage and the electrical terminals can be checked for corrosion but these sensors usually fail due to the internal components wearing over time.
