Indonesian, Yogyakarta, Java Batik painting 1987  4 of 10

Batik is an ancient technique of dyeing fabric using wax and specific paints to create unique patterns. Java is famous for its batik, and Yogyakarta is considered one of the major production and art centres for this craft.  It is renowned for producing both traditional and like these examples contemporary works of art.

Since 2009, batik has been part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

I collected these examples in Jogyakarta in 1987.    They frame up beautifully as works of art to display on the wall.
