Myrrh gum is the sap-like resin produced by a thorny shrub in the Commiphora genus, which includes frankincense. When the bark of the tree is cut, the resin escapes in “tears” or small beads, which harden quickly and become glossy and amber-colored with age.

Dried myrrh gum is highly fragrant and is used alone or in blends with other materials to create quality incense.

FOR USE AS INCENSE

Resin incense will not burn on its own. Resin incense requires a heat source to release its fragrant smoke. The traditional method of burning loose incense is over charcoal tablets in a proper heat resistant charcoal incense burner.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED:

HOW TO BURN RESIN INCENSE:

There are many techniques for burning resin incense, this is just one of many. Resins will not burn on their own, at minimum they require charcoal tablets and a charcoal incense burner.

1. Fill your charcoal burner 3/4 full with sand or rocks to absorb some of the heat. Then place your burner on a heat resistant surface, such as a ceramic coaster or tile, as the bottom of the burner will become very hot and may result in damage to your surface.

2. Using tongs to hold the charcoal tablet, light it following the instructions provided with your charcoal. Place the hot charcoal onto the bed of sand inside your charcoal burner or onto the mesh screen if you burner has one (I prefer to flip the mesh screen so it creates a bowl-like shape). Allow the charcoal 5-15 minutes to fully come to temperature indicated by a layer of ash forming on the tablet.

3. Using a metal spoon, add a very small amount of resin on top of the hot charcoal releasing the fragrant incense smoke. Repeat as desired until the charcoal is exhausted.

4. When finished, allow the charcoal to completely cool in the burner before discarding. When in doubt, dowse it with water.

CAUTION:

Use common sense when burning incense. At no time should you touch or move the incense burner or charcoal tablet once lit--both will be very hot and you will burn yourself. Do not leave burning charcoal or burning incense unattended. Allow for proper air ventilation (crack a window) in the room where you are burning incense. Do not eat. Not intended for consumption.  Keep out of reach of children and pets. Not intended to diagnose or cure. Soul Niche is not responsible for result of improper use.

ABOUT US

Located in Santa Cruz, California. We're a husband and wife team, and second generation small family business. We got our start back in the 80's by way of making our own hand dipped incenses and selling them year round at all the farmers markets and fairs throughout the Bay Area. Guests would visit from all over for the unique selection we offered. If you ever visited these farmers markets likely you saw us rain or shine in our booth with sprawling tables of incense--two parents and three rambunctious kids. Later those rambunctious kids grew up to become the second generation in our family business.

With the advent of the internet we expanded our market reach, becoming one of the first sellers on eBay under the name Cyberincense. As the business grew we rebranded ourselves as Soul Niche. Not much has changed since our start many decades ago, although you won't find us at the farmers markets anymore, we still pride ourselves in our reputation and friendly customer service treating each guest like family. Thank you for taking the time to read this, we hope to personally hear from you soon.

Thank you, Nikki & Ari.
