At the turn of the 1900 Century, collecting souvenir plates or stocknagel in Germany was a highly fashionable activity. The tradition of collecting these hiking souvenirs began in the Alpine regions of Europe and spread to other parts of the world. The older versions are miniature works of art that boast of accomplishments, like climbing mountains.

The walking stick owner would collect a plate for every tourist destination he walked to and the plate signified to observers, the experience and dedication of the walker. By the 1930's the stocknagel had been superseded by pin badges, and with the rise of the automobile industry the necessity to walk was tempered by the convenience of the motor vehicle.
