This is a Carte de Visite (2.25” x 4”), a carboard backed original photo used as a calling card in the mid to late 1800’s when visiting acquaintances, usually given to a servant for presentation to the person being visited.  These cards were highly collectible among social circles as a way of showing a person’s prestige and circle of friends.
