• David Crosby, Stephen Stills & Graham Nash

    'In Concert' 24th October, 1970

Original professional photographs taken at the BBC Television Studios on the 24th October 1970 during the recording of the "David Crosby & Graham Nash" "In Concert" TV programme.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young broke up for the first time in July 1970, at the conclusion of a US tour. This concert was recorded in London only two months later and is apparently the first public performance by just David Crosby and Graham Nash as a duo, and the only performance they would do as a duo until 1971.

At least 3 of the photographs appear not to have been taken during the actual concert itself but during rehearsals. This is because Stephen Stills appears in 2 of the photos (and his arm in a third), and yet he did not perform during the concert due to a combination of Musicians' Union rules and him apparently flaking out in the dressing room. However he did play with the duo during rehearsals which is when the photographs must have been taken. It has often been said that if the trio had performed together at the 1970 concert it may have changed the dynamics of the various member combinations going forward.

I do not know who took the photos, but it may have been Don Smith (1933~2022), who was at the concert as the BBC 'Radio Times' Staff Photographer.

There are 7 images on 3 strips of 35mm colour transparency film which was used to print regular photographs or slide mounted for projection.

11 cm strip with 3 images of David Crosby.
7.5 cm strip with 2 images of guitar/bodies belonging to David Crosby & Stephen Stills.
7.5 cm strip with 2 images of David Crosby, Stephen Stills & Graham Nash together.
