Joan Blaeu (1596 - 1673) took over the running of his father's Amsterdam map publishing business in 1638 in partnership with his brother Cornelis. His farther had established one of the foremost map publishers in Europe and his two sons continued to expand the business. After Cornelis died in 1642 Joan continued under his own name. Map produced by the Blaeu family are considered some of the finest and most accurate maps made in the 17th century. This map comes from an edition of 'Atlas Major' published in French in 1645. The atlas was published in all the major European languages through the 1660's and early 1670's and contained over 600 maps in 11 volumes.

Map area is in fair condition for age, engravings are clear. The map has browning and a number of repairs to the back. Hand colouring.
