Pieter Van Den Keere (c1571- 1646) was a refugee who fled the Low
Countries in 1580s due to religious persecution. He moved to London and in 1584 and became an
apprentice to the engraver Jodocus Hondius.
During a long life he engraved many maps for a range of publishers and
cartographers.
In 1599 he engraved a set of small maps of the
British Isles. The plates came into the
hand of John Speed’s publisher George Humble, who in 1627, the year in which he
published a major edition of Speed’s atlas, also issued Keere’s maps as a
miniature edition. Maps from this
edition are known as ‘Miniature Speeds’ .
Page size is 10cm by 16cm
Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some browning and marks. The map has a tear down the left side which has been repaired and the map has been glued down on Japan tissue paper. Hand colouring.
