Colour disclaimer

We make every effort to represent colours accurately, but screens vary and natural batch variation may occur. For exact matches, we recommend our real wool sample cards

The Felt Box is a UK-based, female-led small business, supplying needle felting wool and tools since 2010. We are based in Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire, and pack orders quickly and carefully from our village unit.

We specialise in carded felting wool, chosen because it felts faster, shapes cleanly, and is easier to control than combed tops. Our range includes 160+ repeatable shades, photographed carefully so you can choose colours with confidence.

We focus on clear guidance and honest descriptions. If a fibre is end-of-roll, we say so. If a product is not suitable for a particular technique, we explain why. Our aim is to help you spend more time making and less time guessing.

All our wool is mulesing-free, responsibly sourced, and supplied with minimal packaging where possible. Customers value our colour range, fast dispatch, and straightforward advice.

Begin by loosely shaping the wool. The more you compress it early on, the faster it will felt.

Place the wool on a foam pad or sponge and use a coarse felting needle, repeatedly inserting it into the wool while shaping. Lift your work regularly so it does not stick. Once the wool becomes dense, switch to a finer needle to firm and refine.

Needle guidance:
36 triangular or 38 star needles work well.
40–42 gauge needles can be used for fine detail but are optional.

About the wool:

  • Carded New Zealand wool from Thefeltbox is one of the best wools for needle felting out there. It comes as carded wool batting where fibres are already mixed, making it easier to felt.
  • This wool is a blend of sheep wools from New Zealand with thickness approx. 27 microns. It comes in a brilliant range of colours and is very easy to use. In this range we have over 100 vibrant shades. Please look at our other items.
  • Our carded wool can be used as core wool and as finishing wool.
  • Short staple length - great, bulky carded wool well suited to 3D needle felting projects.
  • This wool is a lovely wool to work with.
  • The wool included is batting NOT wool roving. All fibres are intermixed. If you are looking for combed tops, in long continuous strands, to use as hair or long fur- look at wool rovings instead. Our carded wool will not be suitable for this specific purpose.
  • Please don’t start with Merino wool tops as these are hard to work with and can put you off.
  • As a surface you can use any cushion or a sponge (We sell these too). You can use an old piece of cloth on the top to protect your surface.

IMPORTANT NOTEs: Although we take great care to make sure our photographs illustrate the colour of each wool shade, your screen/monitor settings may affect how it appears to you.

*The wool is carefully washed before carding, however you may still find some grass bits that are perfectly normal for a natural product.
