This cable enables your Yaesu radio to control your SPE Expert linear amplifier. The cable assembly has a DB15 male plug which connects to the SPE Expert's CAT socket and a 10 pin mini DIN male plug which connects to the transceiver's LINEAR socket.
Suits SPE Expert Linear amplifier models 1K-FA, 1.3K-FA, 1.5K-FA, 2K-FA.
The following functions are available with this cable:
- PTT - The amplifier switches to transmit and back to receive at the same time as the transceiver.
- ALC - Automatically backs off the transmitter's output power when the amplifier is driven to full power.
- Band - The amplifier is able to determine the amateur band that the transceiver is set to. It then automatically switches to the correct band.
- Remote on/off - Switching on the transceiver also switches on the amplifier ready for use. Likewise, switching off the transceiver powers down the amplifier.
- Tx Inhibit - Used to improve the receive / transmit switching efficiency.

There are two methods for your linear amplifier to
obtain operating frequency information from your transceiver
automatically. You can use the
information here to choose which you prefer. You will then need to buy
the corresponding Cat or Band control cable as they are wired
differently.
Cat control
The amplifier is able to determine the exact frequency that the transceiver is tuned to. It then automatically switches to the correct band and if the amplifier has an ATU fitted, recalls the appropriate ATU setting from memory.
Pro - The ATU in the amplifier is able to more accurately match the antenna before you transmit. Removes ambiguity in certain cases e.g. the new 5MHz band.
Con - May make it difficult or impossible to control the transceiver from your computer e.g. for logging software.
Band control
The
amplifier is able to determine the amateur band that the transceiver is
set to. It then automatically switches to the correct band.
Pro
- Doesn't use your Cat connection so you can use this to control
your transceiver from your PC e.g. for logging software.
Con - The ATU in the amplifier can only coarse tune the antenna when switching bands and can only determine the exact operating frequency when you begin transmitting. Band data can be ambiguous in certain cases e.g. the new 5MHz band.
Cat is always more accurate and should be used if possible.
