Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a very unique and rare Amperite SR80 "Velocity" ribbon microphone made in New York City during the 1940's. This very seldom seen mic was Amperite's flag ship model being the most expensive of the few ribbon mics  being offered for sale at that time. It has a very industrial steampunk look that's all it's own and it's massive having the same overall size as the more common RCA 77DX model mic. It comes with it's original chrome yoke, newer cable, original radio flag and period 1940's era Atlas DS-6 desk stand.

Pic # 2 shows the variant SR80 mic as it was listed in the 1940's with basic specs and it's original price. I believe the SR80 is set at high impedance but it does have a nice warm tone to it. It's bi-directional picking up sound only from the front and rear.

I should state that this mic came to me in a non-working condition and needed a ton of cleaning. I mic no longer works though it has all of it's original components inside. When I went through the mic the wiring for the on / off switch is all intact but the two wires coming out of the motor are not properly connected and i don't have the proper diagram to connect them properly so I'm leaving that alone. This mic may very well work fine as the ribbon appears to be in excellent shape. Not stretched or torn and the magnets are perfect. That being said I would this precious old mic shipped off to ENAK based out of New Jersey for a professional rebuild so that Clarence can do everything right. A rebuild at Enak would cost somewhere between #300.00 to $600.00 depending on the amount of parts and labor involved but it would be money well spent and you could get this sounding like a new studio mic again.

I would place the value of this SR-80 microphone in perfect working order at between $2000.00 and $2,500.00.

Due to the rarity and very good overall condition this is going to be a very wise investment. The Flag alone is a $400.00 piece. The flag is an all aluminum design with the call sign B.S.S. About B.S.S. They started in the 1950's.

Broadcasting System of San-in, Inc. (BSS) a Japanese radio station and TV station broadcast out of Tottori Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture. It is affiliated with Japan Radio Network (JRN), National Radio Network (NRN), Japan News Network (JNN) and TBS Network. It's a very cool and nostalgic look for the mic adding good value. You can always touch up the flag with fresh black paint but I have left it alone as it has a nice patina to it and is probably more valuable as is. It seems to have been an accessory sold by Amperite as there is one pictured in the advertisement in pic # 2.

The SR80 weighs roughly 6 pounds and is appx 10 inches tall (with yoke) and 12 inches tall with the radio flag X 4 inches across. Really quite massive.

These models only pop up on Ebay about once a year and rarely as nice as this one being offered.

As you can see in the pictures provided this microphone has typical cosmetic wear.

The SR80 has an all metal housing with a chromed pot metal yoke for pivoting. There are very lite signs of tiny chrome loss on the front and rear grills. The original black cloth inner screen looks very nice though and free of any holes or rips. The chrome body is free of dents or fractures. Just lite corrosion. The Amperite badge has a nice brass patina but completely legible. The screws on the side of the mic and the screw for the tension mechanism work great giving you just the right angle needed. The joint mechanism above the switch / lower pistol grip has plenty of tension as well. The threading for the cable and stand are perfect. Nothing stripped. You may hang this mic from a boom arm as well and it will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have as it has the universal thread though a desk stand is provided.

The cable itself is soft, pliable and shows no wear. The female offset 3 pin connector is still present. you'll just need an offset 3 pin cable to operate. If you have the mic rebuilt you can always have a Cannon or Switchcraft XLR attachment installed to make the mic balanced.

If you want a truly rare older American ribbon mic to use daily then you should consider this SR80 for a rebuild. It can also be used for display or prop purposes just as is.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...

The stand is an older and rarer Atlas DS-6 desk stand from the 1940's era and made in Brooklyn, NY.

Before the DS-7 & DS-5 models were introduced from Atlas the DS-6 model was available. It was one of the first models made and sold by Atlas when they first started as a company in the late 1940's. It was only sold for a couple of years before being discontinued which explains why you see so few of these around today.

The DS-6 was sold with either a single riser or dual rider. Once the DS-6 was discontinued Atlas made the single riser DS-5 or the dual riser DS-7 model. Both the DS-5 and DS-7 model stands utilized the same common looking base but this DS-6 model had the tulip style looking a bit more elegant and deco in nature. A classic design that really screams 1930's / 40's.

The DS-6 makes a very stable platform due to it's weight and wide base. It gives you a bit of height as well being 5 1/2 inches tall. With the mic on top it's appx 17 inches tall.

The chrome stem / riser shows very lite wear in the form of fine scratches. The base shows no wear at all and the black paint is very nice. There are no dents or fractures in the cast iron base and the 3 original felt pads are still present. They show no wear. There is a cable exit on the back bottom portion of the base as seen in pictures. This is a pretty clean early DS-6 model stand overall.
