Every year, graphic designer Taku Satoh picks out leather to be used in the TS Cover series. The 2021 edition is eye-popping and fresh, yet smooth with a chic texture.

The TS series covers have a history of coming in black or silver for a sophisticated look, but that was turned on its head this year with this bright orange leather cover.

“This year, I was smitten the moment I saw this vibrant orange. The fine texture and energizing color balance each other perfectly,” Satoh says.

The leather is created by Italian tanner La Bretagna, founded in 1961. The company takes on all kinds of challenges to provide high quality, all-natural tanned leather.

Seta means silk in Italian, and that perfectly describes the luxurious touch of this vegetable-tanned leather. It uses an all-new processing method developed in 2018, so this is very much an all-new leather product.

The biggest appeal of this leather is its supple and soft feel that you’ll have a hard time taking your hands off of. Compared to standard vegetable tanned leather, this is light and sturdier. The company rose to the challenge of developing a bright color that was previously difficult to pull off when using traditional vegetable tanning methods.

The cover exterior boasts a natural texture on its natural leather, making each cover completely unique from the next.

Graduated from Tokyo University of The Arts in 1979, majoring in design, and completed his master’s degree in 1981.

Joined Dentsu, Inc. before establishing the Taku Satoh Design Office in 1984.

Created product designs and branding for Oishii Gyunyu milk, Lotte XYLITOL gum, and much more.

Currently active across a broad spectrum of projects, including general direction for NHK Educational TV’s “Design-Ah” series and art direction for “Nihongo de Asobo.”

Current director of design museum 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo.
