For most
collectors & enthusiasts - THIS is where the story of PYREX began
- with their HIGH QUALITY; THICK Walled & HEAVY; STRAW-YELLOW; ICONIC
"Crystal"-Clear Product Line - the "GO-TO" bake-ware items,
even still.
Offered
here is a VINTAGE JAJ-PYREX, Crystal-Clear, Thick-Walled, Heavy, Straw-Yellow,
DUAL-HANDLED OCTAGONAL Casserole-Lid - in excellent, barely-used
condition. This item is
JAJ-PYREX - made in ENGLAND – 1950’s.
All
surfaces are HIGHLY-Glossy, shiny & clean - silky smooth. There is a crack from the edge to the top of lid,
near one corner and a few tiny flea-bites in the glass mold overflow; otherwise,
NO obvious significant chips, stains, hazing; so significant rubs or scratches - some fine rubs, scratches or incidental contact marks.
The
glass is extra thick and heavy, deep straw-yellow in cast. This Lid is
eight-sided, there is an embossed circle in the center of
the lid (typical of PYREX); and two small, subtle, horizontal, arched
handles.
Embossed
on one handle is "PYREX BRAND" and "48/6" in tiny lettering
on the other side of that handle; on the other handle is embossed
"S-205-C".
This OCTAGONAL
Casserole Lid measures - 7 5/8" in diameter across
the edge, 8 3/8" across the handles; 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" across the

SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION -
OCTAGONAL
Lidded-Casserole Dish
-
An OCTAGONAL
Lidded-Casserole was made as a specialty item - either piece is hard
to find. This S-205-C (cover) Casserole LID matches the 105-B (base) 1 1/2 PT,
Casserole Base.
The
handles are ICONIC to the JAJ-Brand PYREX. They appeared early on in production
of UK PYREX.
JAJ
PYREX – ENGLAND -
PYREX
was first marketed in The United Kingdom (UK), in Harrods's, in 1919. J A
Jobling was licensed to produce PYREX in 1921 and began to produce PYREX, in
Sunderland, in 1922/23 ...
until recently (2006?). Initially NA PYREX patterns were copied for production
by Jobling - once established, he released JAJ specific pattern/mold
items.
The very
FIRST of "many to follow" BACK-STAMPS in the United Kingdom was the
"J/P"- which looked very close to the "C/P" logo used
in NA - also included in the back-stamp was other relevant
information. This OLDEST hallmark appeared on glassware
until 1953, then the V-Shaped "CROWN" logo came to be, until ~1975. Jobling’s
license to manufacture PYREX expired in 1973 – at which point CORNING took over
operations and began to label products with “PYREX …. ENGLAND” embossed.
