Published by Christopher Enterprises in 1977, this is heroic fantasy poster number one by Bernie Wrightson illustrating Conan. It is the beginning of a series of posters right soon would illustrate for the publisher that would rage far and wide in subject matter, from vampires to dinosaurs to werewolves and would introduce his incredible line work and color to a generation only familiar with his work in the comics. Wrightson had completed work on the Swamp Thing series for DC with Len Wein and would begin some of the best work of his career on the Warren magazines, interpreting Edgar Allan Poe, adding a series of black-and-white stories that would define his style in the genre.
The poster series wouldn’t include another heroic fantasy image but certainly for Wrightson, the one treatment was enough. Robert E.Howard’s character is portrayed in all his bloody, violent glory, fighting the essential tentacled monster in Bernie’s over the top violent best..
45 years later the poster is in good shape for its age with bright color and strong blacks very much the way it looked when it was released. It has been stored in flat files all these years out of the light and without wear. It’s an essential addition to anyone’s Bernie Wrightson collection and a fine example of his work for Christopher Enterprises and a series of posters that introduced him to a new generation.
