Please not that the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM uses a "focus-by-wire" system. Unlike older lenses where the focus ring is physically geared to the glass, your lens uses an electronic motor to move the elements even in manual mode. If the camera is off or the lens is detached, turning the ring won't do anything.
