Up for sale is a First Edition of "The French Consul", a hardcover fiction novel by Lucien Bodard, translated from the original French novel by Barbara Bray. This English language First Edition was published by Knopf in 1977. This is the story of a French diplomat, his son, & wife, who are living in early 1900s China, & have to navigate issues like Chinese corruption, tensions with the British, & an ongoing drug trade (the "opium wars"), all while the French diplomat tries to get a 1,000 mile long railroad connection to Vietnam built. While it is a work of fiction, it is hugely influcrned by the author's own life, who was born in 1914 in China, & his real life dad was a French dipolmat. It has unique historical elements, such as basically covering the history of Shanghai, China, throughout the course of the book. This book is in very good condition, with the only minor issues being a crease in the front interior dust jacket panel, and the name of a former owner of this book written in blue ink on the interior of the cover insicribed with a 1978 date. This novel will ship to you in a bubble wrap padded envelope via with USPS Media Mail.
