I have already sold many, and they have been happy with the item. A little honesty goes a long way.
It was my intention for this to be mostly informational, but I have sold many.
Yes, this will work, it is functional, and I have the meter reading to prove it, but it is not one of those $179 perfectly form fitting ones. It is made of a colander. See the photos and descriptions.
I did get refund requests from a few people that did not read the description. Some people will just click and buy ANYTHING without reading, and take no responsibility. I will not refund. It is a very difficult and a long process because someone didn't read the description or look at the photos. It is a mess of fees, bank charges, etc, and I order these one at a time, as they sell. They are build to order, and I cannot refund them. To make the process as fast as I can, I buy the part as soon as the payment clears. Again, NO REFUNDS.
I have added more text to the photos since4 some people still won't read. For those that do read, and support me. Thank you for your business. It is appreciated.
All sales are 100% FINAL. READ, READ, READ!!!
Now instead of messaging people asking "are you sure you read it?", I have put another confirmation before the final purchase step and checkout page, and yes, they still sell, people have been happy, and I have good feedback from them. This is a very cost effective solution for some. It's not like people are going to be staring at your meter box shield, and thinking "that doesn't look perfect". It just gets the job done, and looks a lot better than covering your meter in aluminum foil. The power company can see the meter. No obstruction.
This listing was started to warn others of a fraudulent auction scam. The price is being set below the scammers auction to draw attention so you can find it and read this description. If you still really want one, I will order them from the supplier, modify them, and send them to you, so that way, I am actually selling the item, and ebay will not cancel the auction. This will take the time of me having to buy them, modify them, then send them to you, so please allow 1 week for processing.
The other seller is selling these colanders as Faraday cages designed for a smart meter, but they are not. All he has done is grind the handles off of the kitchen colander, and is selling it as a Faraday cage, then lying about it. It doesn't fit snug as a real shield made for the meter would, but it is $150.00 cheaper.
If he had been honest, like I am being, he would probably still sell them, but he is not. He has bad feedback stating that they are just kitchen strainers, then his response to the feedback was complete denial. They are obviously strainers with the handles cut off, as you can see in all of the photos. Smart meter shields don't have feet for sitting them on a kitchen countertop.
The last photo shows the expensive type, which this is meant to replace. It looks a little better, but it's much thinner material.
Hopefully this knowledge can help others to not fall into this scammers trap. They were not describing the truth, and taking people to the cleaners.
If you want to save $100 or more and go ahead with this method, then at least you have an honest description of what is being sold here, instead of someone pulling a scam.
You can attach it a number of ways. You can use silicone, tie wire, duct tape, or super magnets. I do not like the silicone method, I prefer using magnets, but it's up to you, and may vary depending on where you use them. Theft may be an issue, and you may want to consider how your power company will respond. You don't want the guy coming to read your meter to steal it, so maybe you want to secure it. I use Super Magnets as I said, they also make a good ground to the metal box where I scraped the paint off of the box where the magnet contacts.
If you have any questions, let me know.
