U. S. Troops & Marching Band
Spanish -American War
Parade
These three photos were mixed with some glass negatives shot in 1908 stored in a house in Central Minnesota.
We believe these prints are from the Spanish-American War and show United States Solders marching with a military band through one of the areas contested. The date would be circa 1898.
(N.B. - the scan of photo #2 is a poor one. The picture is actually clear throughout.)
Our research indicates several possibilities that should be researched further by the buyer.
First, we believe the two flags in the first photo are the US flag (highest) and the occupying flag of Spain (lowered).
Second, we can not identify the country where this event takes place.
Third, the unit that we see marching with the band might be the Rough Riders, in which case, Teddy Roosevelt might well be in the photos.
Fourth, If Roosevelt is in the photos, it may be him on his horse in the parade ground photo (photo #3). We have enlarged a section of photo #3 to illustrate this possibility. The horse has similar markings to TR's horse and the man astride him might be Roosevelt.
Fifth, the uniforms of the marching soldiers are generally those of US soldiers in the Army the time. However, more needs to be done analyzing them. The Rough Riders were a Cavalry Unit, but they mostly fought on foot. How this affected their uniforms we could not determine, but it may explain why the US Army unit is marching on foot in these photos.
We offer these photos for further research by the buyer.
