GUY WORSDELL(1908-1978)
ILLUSTRATOR
CLASSICAL MUSIC,
STUDY OF MARGUERITE NAMARA AT THE PIANO
C1950
Guy Worsdell studied at the Central School of Art under Bernard Meninsky. His subsequent career was principally as an illustrator. He was a member of the Penrith Society and had a studio at Cairncross near Porthguidden. He does not seem to have exhibited at any of the fashionable Salons
One of his interests was music and he spent much time studying and drawing famous artists, mostly at rehearsals. We have a series of these interesting drawings which we are offering individually. Some are mounted, others not. They are all in fine condition and fortunately nearly all are identified by the artist. None are signed, but are guaranteed to be by him.
He was particularly keen on Sir Adrian Boult and his orchestras, but there are many studies of individual artists and musical ensembles.
This interesting mounted ink drawing is of the American internationally famed mezzo-soprano, Marguerite Namara at the piano She was of distinguished ancestry, being from a wealthy family from Cleveland, Ohio, two of whose ancestors, John Alden and Prescilla Mullens, travelled to America on the Mayflower. She studied at the Milan Conservatoire and sang in opera, Broadway musicals, and later in life concert recitals where Worsdell met and drew her. Her stage name was taken from her mother's maiden name of McNamara.
