 “On midnight of September 6, the accused entered the barrack’s room of their platoon mate Pfc. Satiago.  They woke him up, tied his arms and legs with tape and forced a rag into his throat.  A few minutes later, a chemical reaction called lactic acidosis caused his lungs to begin bleeding.  He drowned in his blood and was pronounced dead at thirty seven minutes past midnight.  These are the facts of the case and they are undisputed.”

With those words, prosecuting attorney, Capt. Jack Ross (Kevin Bacon) makes it crystal clear to the jury.  The two Marines on trial for murder are guilty of the events leading to wrongful death.  The question their defense rests on, however, is why did they do it?  Was it motivated for personal reasons or were they merely following orders?  And if so, whose?

Assigned to defend them is Lieutenant J.G.  Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), a lawyer specializing in plea bargaining.  Goaded by his clients, who refuse to accept a deal, and pressured by his defense team partner,  Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway (Demi Moore),  Kaffee reluctantly agrees to take the case to trial.

Kaffee’s only hope is to prove that the two Marines’ superior officer,  Lt.  Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland), was himself commanded to initiate their actions.  To do this Kaffee puts his career on the line by formally accusing Kedrick’s base commander, Colonel Nathan Jessep (Jack Nickolson), a politically powerful career officer, of giving the original order.

But Kaffee’s charges are lacking in one vital area.  Proof.  And without it, his accusations can only lead to disgrace…and disbarment.
