"Black Ball is the latest band emerging out of the Australian rock ‘n’ roll scene and features guitarist Bevynn of The Corps and Rust fame. Other members? None! Bevynn wrote all the music and lyrics for Black Ball’s debut EP “Coward’s Punch” and took care of all instrumental duties as well! But just because Bevynn worked on this alone, it doesn’t mean it’s ‘just another project’ though and Black Ball needs to be looked at as a band, no problem!
Because Bevynn is anything but a ‘lone wolf’, on every single track on this 45 he gets a little help from his friends. Barry (Plan Of Attack), Al (Marching Orders, Razorcut), Alex (The Corps), Garry (Rust) and Carol (Ozska's) on vocals and Kev (The Corps, AVO) on guitar, they’re all on here making it a real ‘family’ EP that features some of the top boys (and a girl) from the Aussie Oi! and punk scene. This while Black Ball leans more to that traditional Australian rock ‘n’ roll sound with streetpunk and pub rock influences for that extra bite.
Black Ball makes me think of a mix between Rose Tattoo and Cock Sparrer. It’s raw, there are some great adrenaline pumping riffs and guitar solos on this 7” and it definitely has that southern rock feel on a track such as “First Love”, while Black Ball has that rowdy (“Coward’s Punch”), yet ultra-catchy and melodic (“Lights On” and “Running From You”) side as well. All that in just four, great, tracks! But in all honesty, I didn’t expect anything less. Bevynn guitarwork in Rust and The Corps is amazing and he’s been in bands since the 80’s, Black Ball was bound to rock!" - American Oi!
