Bought several similar devices for my son several years ago.    This one was never used, so I can't speak towards its effectiveness.

I am not sure what size batteries this uses, and it is possible the batteries will have drained or even corroded.
I am not sure if they are onboard or separate.   Therefore, you may have to purchase new batteries to use if they are drained
