La prima ?dilatazione? di Botero non è da cercare in una figura rappresentante un essere vivente, la prima forma dilatata è un oggetto, precisamente uno strumento musicale, un mandolino, il cui foro di risonanza è stato rappresentato con dimensioni assai ridotte, originando uno strumento tozzo e allargato, un risultato che affascinò l'artista tanto da far diventare quell'aspetto ?grasso? una sorta di marchio di riconoscimento.
