Carman, W.Y.

New York, 1957, Arco, first US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, VG/VG condition ( small prev. owners book plate on frnt free end paper ), 7 1/2 x 10, 168 pages, 110 B&W illus, index.

Colorful uniforms, waving plumes, and glittering accoutrements are integral parts of state occasions and ceremonies in the United Kingdom. These glamorous garments, as well as the No. i dress and battle dress of today's soldier, are descended from costumes worn by British fighting men for hundreds of years, though the medieval hose may have become the battle dress trousers, and the richly plumed hat the beret of the present day soldier. In British Military Uniforms, W. Y. Carman, a recognized authority on the history of the British Army, traces the changes in style of army uniform from the time of Henry VII to the present day.

Based on contemporary evidence, official War Office papers and records, and many years of research, the text covers the trends of military fashion in a simple and detailed style. The 110 illustrations show how the style of pictorial records has changed over the centuries from oil painting through drawings and prints to the modern photograph. Pikemen, musketeers, grenadiers, dragoons and hussars are but a few of the military types whose evolution is traced and pictured in color and black-and-white, with reproductions from such sources as the collection of Her Majesty the Queen, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE  !

AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY OR FIRST CLASS.

Due to increasingly higher U.S. postal rates, and the many packages that we have lost or damaged, on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services. Although expensive, many times they are cheaper than what I could send it for by US Mail – and much more secure.

TO ALL INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS - WE SHIP INTERNATIONALLY ONLY THROUGH EBAY’S GLOBAL SHIPPING PROGRAM. EBAY HAS SET UP A SHIPPING HUB IN THE U.S. WHERE WE SHIP YOUR PACKAGE. EBAY THEN SHIPS OUT TO YOU. THE ACTUAL SHIPPING PRICE IS LISTED ON YOUR PAGE, FOR YOUR COUNTRY.

WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS PROCESS, EBAY WILL INVOICE YOU AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE PAYMENT. WE CANNOT CHANGE SHIPPING COSTS, WE CANNOT SHIP DIRECTLY TO YOUR COUNTRY. WE CANNOT DECLARE AS A GIFT OR CHANGE THE SHIPPING PRICE.

WE CANNOT DECLARE A LOWER SELLING PRICE SINCE THE SALE IS THE RECORD. AT PRESENT EBAY WILL NOT ALLOW US TO COMBINE SHIPPING ON MULTIPLE ITEMS.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.

ON PAPER BACK BOOKS & MAGAZINES, MANY TIMES WE CAN COMBINE SEVERAL BOOKS AND SAVE POSTAGE IN THE US ONLY.

If you have further questions - happy to answer them

Please browse our other items and bookmark our site - we constantly add new items.

We pack your item extremely carefully so you will receive it in the best condition.

This sometimes causes us to be a day or two late in processing orders if we have a good number of sales as we normally only drive to the Post Office on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Please be patient- we aim to provide the best service we can. We have been in business 50 years.

VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS

Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. Paper also can be sometimes somewhat brittle.

All vintage paperbacks require proper & careful care in handling & reading or the spine glue will crack!!.

SHIPPING TIMES

WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6   WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED.

Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why.

IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE.    PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT,   PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED.

( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are  being implemented by the US Post Office   - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient )

WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING . Bob Ruman
