Original etching.60 x 45 cms. laid paper. The etching represents an ornated candlestick from the collection of the cardinal Lanti. Piranesi dedicated the etching to Mr Giovanni Rous. Gio Battista Piranesi signed at bottom left corner.the decoration with arabesque and the figure of one Telamón.
This kind of pieces were the outcome of the Works of Piranesi as restorer and delaer in antiquities. he was a master in the integration of ancient sculptural fragments with the result of fancy objects that catched the imagination and taste of the "Grand Tour" travellers in Rome. His clientele were active buyers of these antiquities that nowadays are displayed in the most important museums worldwide.
This etching comes from the first parisian edition printed from the original plates by his son Francesco. The latter editions printed by Firmin Didot on 1830 onwards and Calcografia Vaticana were in wove paper and with an increasing plate worn due to excessive use.
