VON RICHTHOFEN - The Legend Evaluated.

RICHARD T BICKERS

London 1996, Airlife/ Naval Institute, first UK edition, hard bound w/dj, VG/VG CONDITION, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, 172 pp, illus, appendice, bibliog, index.

Of all the First World War's fighter aces, the legendary von Richthofen has captured the world's imagination more than any other pilot of that era. But was his reputation inspired by the Kaiser's propaganda machine or was the legend created by Allied pilots who were outfought by Germany's advanced technology rather than the Baron's pure combat skills in the air?.In this book the author puts the facts behind the German ace's fighting record into a perspective with other famous fighter pilots of both World Wars. In World War Two the technical balances between the combatants were far more evenly weighted and tests of fighting skills were highly tactical, faster and more frequently lethal. In World War One leaders of fighter formations had the most opportunities to score.

When a single aircraft was intercepted, the leader attacked while the others covered him. In the Battle of Britain, when large numbers of day bombers heavily escorted by fighters were approaching or over England, the RAF's greatly outnumbered fighters could not protect one another. They had to break formation on making contact, to get at the bombers and repel the Messerschmitts. Later, when RAF day bombers with a big fighter escort retaliated, swarms of German fighters came at them. The close escort stayed with the bombers while the high and top cover fighters scattered at three or four times the speed of 19141918 aircraft, to hit fleeting targets; with less than fifteen seconds' ammunition. In such dogfights only very short bursts of fire were possible and the targets were more elusive than in the First World War. In general, conditions in the Second World War were less favourable to Fighter pilots than in von Richthofen's time.

THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE  !

AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY OR FIRST CLASS.

Due to increasingly higher U.S. postal rates, and the many packages that we have lost or damaged, on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services. Although expensive, many times they are cheaper than what I could send it for by US Mail – and much more secure.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.

ON PAPER BACK BOOKS & MAGAZINES, MANY TIMES WE CAN COMBINE SEVERAL BOOKS AND SAVE POSTAGE IN THE US ONLY.

We pack your item extremely carefully so you will receive it in the best condition.

This sometimes causes us to be a day or two late in processing orders if we have a good number of sales as we normally only drive to the Post Office on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Please be patient- we aim to provide the best service we can. We have been in business 50 years.

VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS

Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. Paper also can be sometimes somewhat brittle.

All vintage paperbacks require proper & careful care in handling & reading or the spine glue will crack!!.

SHIPPING TIMES

WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6   WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED.

Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why.

IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE.    PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT,   PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED.

( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are  being implemented by the US Post Office   - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient )

WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING . Bob Ruman
