Digital Equipment Corporation DEC VSXXX-GA – Vintage 3-Button Mechanical Mouse – Logitech Electronics

Original DEC Workstation Mouse | Made in Ireland | Exceptionally Clean Internals | Long Original Cable

A wonderful surviving example of early workstation computing history: an original Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VSXXX-GA three-button mechanical mouse, featuring Logitech-branded electronic components and the distinctive design associated with DEC's professional UNIX and VAX workstation era.

This is no ordinary vintage PC mouse. Built for Digital Equipment Corporation's workstation systems, including the VAXstation and DECstation families, it represents a period when computer peripherals were substantial, carefully engineered pieces of equipment, designed for professional environments.

From its generously proportioned casing and three large mechanical buttons to its remarkably long original cable, this mouse is a fascinating reminder of an earlier generation of computing.

Condition – Remarkably Well Preserved

What makes this particular example especially interesting is its condition, both externally and internally.

The mouse has been carefully opened for inspection, revealing a surprisingly clean internal mechanism.

Anyone familiar with traditional mechanical ball mice will recognise that the tracking rollers almost invariably accumulate a layer of dirt and residue after years of use. Remarkably, the rollers inside this mouse were perfectly clean, with none of the usual accumulated deposits.

The original tracking ball is also in immaculate visual condition.

The interior was so clean that no substantial servicing was necessary.

All three mouse buttons have been manually tested and click positively, with a reassuring mechanical action.

The original, exceptionally long cable is in excellent visual condition, with no obvious damage to its outer insulation. The specialist DEC connector is present and shows only normal age-related wear.

The mouse casing remains very presentable, with minor surface marks appropriate to its age. There is a visible indentation on the centre button, shown clearly in the photographs.

Taken together, the clean rollers, excellent tracking ball, responsive buttons and well-preserved cable suggest that this mouse has experienced relatively little wear or has been particularly carefully maintained during its working life.

Its complete history is unknown, however its surviving condition speaks for itself.

Logitech Electronics Inside

An interesting discovery during internal inspection was the presence of Logitech-branded electronic components.

Although externally branded Digital Equipment Corporation, the mouse contains Logitech electronics, providing an interesting connection between two important names in the history of personal and professional computing.

The Logitech markings were observed directly during inspection. The precise manufacturing relationship between DEC and Logitech has not been independently established.

Specifications

Testing and Functionality

The following physical and mechanical checks have been completed:

Electrical operation has not been tested, as a compatible DEC workstation is not available.

Movement tracking, electronic button signalling and communication with a host computer therefore remain unverified.

This mouse is offered as electrically untested vintage equipment, without a guarantee of full functionality.

Compatibility

Designed for compatible Digital Equipment Corporation workstation systems.

This is not a standard PC PS/2 or USB mouse. Its specialist connector and signalling require compatible hardware or a suitable interface adapter.

Please verify compatibility with your particular DEC system before purchasing.

A Piece of Computing History

Digital Equipment Corporation played a significant role in the development of minicomputers, professional workstations and computing systems that helped shape the UNIX era.

The VSXXX-GA belongs to that history.

Unlike the lightweight peripherals commonly produced today, this mouse has a distinctive physical presence, three substantial buttons and a remarkably long cable that reflects a very different approach to desktop workstation design.

Finding one with such exceptionally clean internal rollers, an immaculate tracking ball and three mechanically responsive buttons is particularly pleasing.

It would make an excellent addition to a DEC workstation restoration, a vintage computing collection or a display of historic computer peripherals.

Included: One original Digital Equipment Corporation VSXXX-GA three-button mouse with its permanently attached cable, exactly as photographed.

The photographs form part of the description and show the actual item being offered.

A beautifully preserved example of classic DEC workstation hardware, with Logitech electronics inside and much of its original character intact.
