The story begins with a young boy named Danny visiting a natural history museum. While admiring the dinosaur exhibit, he wishes aloud that he could play with one. To his surprise, one of the dinosaurs comes to life and agrees to be his playmate. Danny rides out of the museum on the dinosaur's neck, embarking on an extraordinary day of everyday adventures around the city.

Throughout the day, the gentle dinosaur learns to navigate the human world—stopping for red lights, letting cars drive under him, helping people cross the street, and even joining Danny for a baseball game. He treats Danny's friends to rides, plays hide-and-seek, and eats ice cream. At the end of the day, the dinosaur returns to his home at the museum, and Danny goes home happy, dreaming of their wonderful time together.
