Documenting pre-First World War Canadian
militia training in the interior of British Columbia, this original real photo
postcard captures the cavalry review of the British Columbia Horse at Vernon Camp in 1912. Formed in 1910 as the 30th Regiment (British Columbia
Horse), the unit drew volunteers from across the Okanagan and Kootenay valleys,
conducting annual summer training maneuvers at the military grounds in Vernon. Upon the outbreak of the First World War in August
1914, officers and men from the regiment mobilized to form the core of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles
Battalion (CEF), which went on to serve with distinction in the trenches of
France and Flanders as part of the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade. Produced locally by the Vernon Photo Company, this
image provides exceptional clarity of the mounted squadrons in uniform prior to
wartime mobilization. An
evocative and historic 1912 Canadian military real photo postcard recording the
British Columbia Horse in formation at Vernon, preserved in clean unused
condition.
