CANADA 1897 1¢ JUBILEE ON COVER THREE RIVERS QUEBEC SQUARED CIRCLE LOCAL USAGE

1897 (Jul. 7), Bank Corner-Card Drop Cover, Local Delivery in Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers), Quebec. Commercial wove cover bearing dark blue typographic corner card for the "QUEBEC BANK, / THREE RIVERS, P. Q." with five-day return instruction, addressed in purple pencil to "Narcisse Grenier Esq, City". Franked at upper right with a single 1¢ orange Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee, tied by a THREE RIVERS / JY 7 / 97 / QUE. squared circle cancel, paying the 1¢ carrier drop-letter rate. Horizontal paper wrinkles, scattered handling tone flecks on face, and light peripheral wear; see scans for more condition information [Scott #51].

Mailed within three weeks of the official issue of the Diamond Jubilee series, this commercial banking cover demonstrates early local postal use of the 1¢ Jubilee for municipal delivery. The single 1¢ adhesive correctly prepaid the statutory carrier drop-letter tariff applicable to domestic letters posted in letter-carrier delivery cities. Originating from the Three Rivers branch of the historic Quebec Bank (Banque de Québec, founded 1818), the cover was handled through the local post office using the distinctive Three Rivers squared circle hammer, which neatly ties the commemorative stamp. The recipient, Narcisse Grenier, was a prominent local attorney (avocat) with offices facing the Palais de Justice in Trois-Rivières. Processed and delivered locally without leaving the St. Maurice River district during the high summer of the 1897 Jubilee celebrations. A very clean and desirable early Diamond Jubilee commercial usage combining a 1¢ Jubilee drop rate with a clear strike of the Three Rivers squared circle on bank correspondence.
