Vintage BURNHAM, FOX & CO. - AMHERST, MASS. Wood Thumb Screw Plow Plane

This is a vintage Burnham, Fox & Co. - Amherst, Mass. Wood Thumb Screw Plow Plane.   It is made of Beach wood and both the wedge and blade appear to be original.

George Burnham (born 1817) arrived in Amherst in April 1841 after finishing a bench-planemaking apprenticeship in New Hartford, Connecticut. He initially worked as a journeyman for Luther Fox.  Around 1842, George Burnham joined with Benoni Thayer, Hiram Fox, and Aaron Ferry to buy out Luther Fox’s business, forming Burnham, Fox & Co.  In 1844, George Burnham bought out his partners and continued operating the business under his own name as George Burnham, Jr. (marking tools as GEO. BURNHAM JR. AMHERST, MASS.) until around 1853.  So, planes with this marking were made a very short period of time from 1842 to 1844.

I rate this plane in GOOD CONDITION overall.  It is uncleaned, as found.  It has a wood depth stop with a hand wrought thumb screw holding it tight.   The wood thumb screws all work properly.   Overall, a nice example of this early Amherst, Mass. Plow Plane for you to add to your antique tool collection or put to use in your workshop!
