Antique Chinese green glazed terracotta pottery mingqi, or tomb burial object, scholar’s stand.

All but the base is covered with a green glaze first produced during the Han dynasty and revived again during the Ming dynasty.

Encrusted with dirt from centuries of being buried

This scholar’s stand is an example of mingqi, or burial object, meant to be taken with the deceased into the afterlife. The Terracotta Army is the most famous example of these kinds of burial objects, although most mingqi were comprised of more every day, but important items, such as this oil lamp.
