Grafenhausen Sonderstempel Art Nouveau Airmail
OVERVIEW
Offered is a 1977 West Germany international airmail cover to Meaford, Ontario, Canada, bearing the complete Jugendstil in Deutschland (Art Nouveau in Germany) souvenir sheet. The sheet is cataloged as Scott B506a and Michel Block 14.
This is an attractive Art Nouveau topical postal history item combining a complete charity souvenir sheet, a special thematic German Sonderstempel cancel, and a genuine transatlantic airmail destination.
FRANKING & POSTAL HISTORY
The cover bears the complete 1977 Jugendstil in Deutschland souvenir sheet, issued by the Deutsche Bundespost for the "For the Youth" charity series.
The three values are the 30pf plus 15pf floral ornament design, the 70pf plus 35pf stylized female portrait, and the 90pf plus 45pf decorative chair motif.
The sheet is definitively cataloged as Michel Block 14, comprising individual stamp numbers Mi 923–925.
Printed via offset lithography by the Bundesdruckerei Berlin, the full souvenir sheet had a selling price of 1.90 DM, generously paying the international airmail rate.
The sheet is tied by a bold Gräfenhausen commemorative Sonderstempel dated 23 March 1977. The cover also features the blue LUFTPOST instructional etiquette at the upper left.
CONTEXT & COLLECTOR APPEAL
The key feature of this cover is the highly coordinated Art Nouveau presentation.
The 1977 Jugendstil souvenir sheet was designed by Prof. Peter Steiner and celebrates German Art Nouveau design through ornamental, portrait, and furniture motifs.
The Gräfenhausen special cancel is especially appealing because its graphic chair motif directly echoes the 90pf chair design within the souvenir sheet.
This intentional thematic alignment gives the cover strong appeal for collectors of West Germany, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau, design history, charity semi-postals, souvenir sheets on cover, and Sonderstempel cancels.

The Gräfenhausen Sonderstempel strikes are bold and highly legible, and the complete Jugendstil souvenir sheet remains attractive and well presented.
