Sportsman Cabin Stationery Yellowstone Air Tourism

OVERVIEW

Offered is a rare 1930s era in-flight souvenir postcard issued by Western Air Express.

The front features a high-contrast monochrome lithograph of two sportsmen displaying an impressive trout catch at Jackson Lake, with the Grand Teton range in the background.

This card was part of a specific outdoor sports promotional series used as cabin stationery to market the speed and accessibility of the Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone route during the Golden Age of Aviation.

FRANKING & POSTAL HISTORY

As an unposted piece of cabin stationery, this card features the iconic postal directive printed in the upper right stamp box.

The text instructs the passenger to please address and return to stewardess who will stamp and mail for you, confirming its intended use as premium passenger cabin mail.

Collectors of early aviation history and first-decade airline memorabilia prize these cards for documenting the personalized level of stewardess service found in the 1930s.

CONTEXT & COLLECTOR APPEAL

The reverse of this card highlights the legendary status of the region, promoting Jackson Lake and Yellowstone Park as one of the greatest fishing grounds in all the world. The text notes the great scenery and specifically advertises that no fishing license is required in Yellowstone.

Rather than promoting transportation alone, Western Air Express marketed access to world-class fishing, wilderness scenery, and national park tourism.

The postcard therefore serves as an early example of destination-based airline advertising during the formative years of commercial aviation.

This unique combination of Western Air Express history, outdoor sportsman thematic appeal, and the stewardess cabin mail instruction creates a highly desirable crossover artifact.
