Antique ~ Framed Quilt Art Piece ~ Americana ~ Item # 10012026
I purchased several quilting blocks from an estate sale, where the lady selling them said ". . . these were blocks from my great grandmother's collection." And that these blocks were handed down over the years, but were never made into finished quits. So, I purchased them and decided to make them into works of Americana folk-art.
After researching the history of quilt making in the United States, I discovered that cheesecloth {and similar loose gauze or tobacco cloth} was most commonly used in utilitarian and budget-friendly quilts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (roughly 1880 to 1940). Which coincided with the provenance given by the lady selling the quilt blocks. This information provided by the estate sale lady and my research would date the quilt block fabrics to be more than 100 years old. When I pulled on the fabric it was still firm (not rotted) and I was pleased. The block shows expected age and patina consistent with antique textiles. Hand washed in Woolite Delicate fabric cleaner, hand rinsed, laid flat to dry.
Based on the fabrics, construction and overall aging I believe this piece is late 19th to very early 20th century. It is framed in double glass, which allows the viewing of the font unique design and the back intricate hand stitching. This is a collectable piece that showcases the craftsmanship of hand quilting. I am unable to ascertain if the material is feed-sack, so I will NOT advertise that it is made from that material.
This charming hand-stitched antique quilt block is an exceptional gift for display; for any quilter, or crafter, or as nostalgic décor item.
