Sawankhalok ceramics became central to the region’s export trade from the 14th century, when the early-to-middle Ming dynasty reduced their export wares. Thailand competed with Vietnam's export porcelain market, as both stepped in to fill in the “Ming gap” during this period.

Thai celadon was originally influenced by Chinese celadon, but went on to develop its own style and technique. Production started in the 13th century, peaked in the 14th century and continued until the 16th century, according to archeological evidence around Si Satchanalai district in Sukhothai province, Thailand
