Description

A substantial and visually engaging photograph album documenting Argentina during the early 1950s. The album contains approximately 180 images showing a wide variety of locations and subjects, including city views, civic architecture, plazas, ports, landscapes, and scenes of transportation and everyday life.

Many of the photographs appear to have been taken by the compiler of the album, with typed captions carefully pasted beneath the images identifying places and points of interest. Several of the photographs also show numbers within the negatives, suggesting that some were produced by professional studios or local photographers.

The album appears to have been assembled as a personal visual record of travel or residence in Argentina between June 1950 and February 1953. In addition to the photographs, the album also includes a number of printed postcards and real photo postcards which supplement the photographic record.

Among the earlier material included are a small group of postcards relating to the British Exhibition held in Buenos Aires in 1931, together with a few images from Chile and neighbouring regions, adding further geographical context to the collection.

The photographs present an engaging portrait of Argentina during a period of economic prosperity and international prominence in the mid-twentieth century.

Notes

During the first half of the twentieth century Argentina ranked among the wealthiest countries in the world, with Buenos Aires widely regarded as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Americas. The photographs in this album capture the country during the post-war years, a period associated with the presidency of Juan Perón and significant social and economic transformation.

Albums of this scale, containing a large number of well-preserved photographs documenting a single country over several years, provide valuable visual evidence of urban development, travel, and daily life during the period.

An attractive and historically interesting photographic archive of Argentina during its mid-century “golden age”.
